The Journey Starts Here

A Bosnian built a rotating house as a tribute of love for his wife

Northern part of Bosnia has a surprising innovation by a 72-year old romantic Vojin Kusic. A rotating house that rotates a full circle to satisfy his wife Ljubica’s shifting desires as to what she would like to see when she looks out of its windows. “After I reached an advanced age and after my children took over the family business, I finally had enough time to task myself with granting my wife her wish” to be able to change the position of rooms in her house whenever she wants, Kusic said.

Many years ago when they married, Kusic had built another, typical house for himself and his wife in which they raised their three children. At the time, his wife wanted their bedrooms to face the sun, so they did. But this meant their living room faced away from the road. After a while, he says his wife complained that “she could not see people entering our front yard” and Kusic had to remodel everything. "I got tired of her complaints and frequent refurbishing of our family house and I said, 'I'll build you a rotating house so you can spin it as you wish'.

His wife did not wish to comment on the new house. Mr Kusic said he was inspired by Serbian-American inventors Nikola Tesla and Mihajlo Pupin, and that coming from a poor family without the possibility of a good education had forced him to look for ways to make things by himself. The project took six years to finish, except for time off for a hospital stay due to a heart condition. The house is more resistant to earthquake damage than stationary houses, he said. "I asked doctors to try to prolong (my life) for at least a year because I have this project in my head, and... nobody will know how to complete it."
